What Is ECOCERT?

ECOCERT is an internationally recognized certification organization headquartered in France and one of the world’s leading authorities on organic and sustainable product standards. It verifies that products meet strict requirements for organic quality and responsible production practices.

What ECOCERT Certification Ensures

Strict Organic Standards

Products must comply with rigorous requirements that limit or prohibit synthetic chemicals, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and other potentially harmful substances. Certification applies across industries including cosmetics, food, and textiles.

Sustainable and Responsible Practices

ECOCERT evaluates environmental and ethical practices, including responsible sourcing, conservation efforts, fair trade principles, and sustainable resource management.

Globally Recognized Trust

Operating in more than 130 countries, ECOCERT certification is widely respected and trusted worldwide for verifying organic and environmentally responsible production.

What Is the COSMOS Standard?

COSMOS (COSMetic Organic and Natural Standard) is an international certification framework specifically for natural and organic cosmetics. It was developed by five major certification organizations — including ECOCERT — to create consistent standards for cosmetic products across Europe and globally.

The COSMOS standard evaluates the full lifecycle of a product, from ingredient sourcing and manufacturing to packaging and labeling, ensuring transparency and environmental responsibility.

COSMOS provides two certification levels.

COSMOS Natural Certification

COSMOS Natural certification confirms that a cosmetic product is primarily made using ingredients derived from natural sources and produced using environmentally responsible methods.

Requirements for COSMOS Natural

Naturally Derived Ingredients

Ingredients must come from natural sources such as plants, minerals, or other naturally occurring materials.

Carefully Controlled Processing

Only limited processing methods are permitted to preserve ingredient integrity. These include physical processes such as drying or pressing and simple chemical transformations like hydrolysis.

Environmental Responsibility

Products must be developed with sustainability in mind, including responsible sourcing practices and consideration of environmental impact such as biodegradability.

Eco-Conscious Packaging

Manufacturers are encouraged to use recyclable or environmentally friendly packaging materials.

COSMOS Organic Certification

COSMOS Organic certification includes all COSMOS Natural requirements while introducing stricter criteria for organic ingredient content and production standards.

Additional COSMOS Organic Requirements

Minimum Organic Content

• At least 95% of agricultural ingredients must be organically produced.
• Finished products must contain at least 20% organic ingredients overall (10% for rinse-off products).

Certified Organic Raw Materials

Ingredients must comply with recognized organic farming standards.

Strict Production Controls

Manufacturing, processing, and storage must preserve the organic integrity and traceability of ingredients.

No Genetically Modified Organisms

GMOs are prohibited in certified products.
